While, according to initial reports, a fire broke out on a drilling platform in the Caspian Sea, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology believes it to be the eruption of a volcano, while the company Azerbaijani oil company SOCAR claimed that no accidents had been recorded on its works.
Tongues of fire were filmed in the Caspian Sea by a witness. A first hypothesis put forward the idea of an explosion followed by a fire on board an offshore platform, but has been denied.
No accident on drilling platforms in the Caspian Sea has been recorded. Early data suggests it was an eruption of a mud volcano, Azerbaijan’s state oil and gas company (SOCAR) said.
“There were no accidents and work is continuing on the offshore platforms and industrial facilities under SOCAR. The explosion may be due to the eruption of a mud volcano, ”the oil company said in a statement.
Some previously published reports had reported a fire following an explosion on a drilling platform in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
According to Azerbaijani media, the explosion in the Caspian was the result of a seismic process and has a geological origin. Specialists are studying the incident.
A volcano involved?
The explosion in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea follows the eruption of a volcano, according to initial data from experts, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has just announced.
“At present, specialists from the Ministry and the National Center of the Seismological Service are looking into the reasons for the explosion at sea. According to a preliminary version, the cause of the explosion is the eruption of the volcano” , he said in a statement.
Witnesses had assumed that the explosion had occurred at the Umid gas field. The latter was discovered at the end of 2010 and contains, according to expert estimates, some 200 billion cubic meters of gas.
