Beijing | Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Bashar al-Assad on his re-election as head of Syria, while praising “the traditional friendship” between the two countries, the China news agency reported on Tuesday.
Iran and Russia, main allies of the Syrian regime, have already hailed the victory of the outgoing president, re-elected unsurprisingly on Thursday for a fourth term, with more than 95% of the vote.
China has also consistently supported the Syrian regime since the country’s civil war broke out in 2011, joining forces with Russia to block any UN Security Council resolution on the matter.
China “firmly supports Syria in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” Xi Jinping said Monday in a message to his Syrian counterpart, quoted by the official Chinese news agency.
He also pledged China’s help to rebuild the Syrian economy and fight the COVID-19 epidemic.
A decade of war in Syria has claimed nearly half a million lives, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday, saying tens of thousands of victims perished in the regime’s jails, most of them under torture.
