A 7-year-old boy saved his father and sister from drowning in Florida last week. A heroic act: the child swam for almost an hour in the mouth of the Saint Johns River to reach the shore to alert the emergency services …
The Poust family did not go far from the tragedy, Friday May 28. During a boat trip on the Saint Johns River in Jacksonville (Florida, United States), while swimming around the boat, a 7-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister were swept away by the flow.
The father then jumped into the water to try to retrieve his children, but he too was put in difficulty by the force of the current. Her young son finally managed to reach the shore and seek help. An act that saved the dad and the adrift little girl.
Drifting daughter, son and father
At 7 years old, Chase Poust has become a true hero. And it is not his father, Steven, or his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, who will say the opposite. Without the intervention and determination of young Chase, the outcome of this boat trip on the Saint Johns River, Florida’s longest waterway, could have been much more dramatic.
The family had gone fishing, and while the boat was anchored, the two children decided to swim around the boat, under the supervision of their father … But that day, the current was particularly strong and, carried by it , the little sister, Abigail, finally let go of the boat, to which she was clinging.
“The current was so strong that my sister, who usually sits at the back of the boat, let go. So I let go of the boat too and grabbed it, but then I got carried away too ”, Chase told local television News4Jax. The little boy does not manage to get back to the boat. The father then jumped into the water in turn, to help them.
One hour of swimming against the tide
The little girl was equipped with a life jacket and was floating, which was not the case with the father, who ended up exhausting himself… Having caught up with his children, he advised his son to try to reach the shore to get help. “I told them both that I love them because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, and Steven Poust. I tried to stay with her [sa fille] as long as possible… I exhausted myself and she pulled away from me. “
But when all hope might have seemed lost, Chase, after about an hour of swimming, managed to reach shore. An endless effort, against the tide, while swimming the dog.
But the child showed control by taking care to rest on his back by floating when he got tired. The boy then ran to the nearest house to raise the alarm.
All safe and sound
Many means were then taken by the local authorities to find the father and his daughter, still adrift. Firefighters, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the government agency responsible for managing the state’s biodiversity, were involved in the search.
Steven and Abigail Poust were finally found safe and sound, after having drifted for more than a mile, or more than 1.6 km…
An almost unexpected rescue, which would not have been possible without the determination and bravery of the young boy. “The little man… He managed to reach the coast and alert the emergency services, and that’s what saved our lives”, his father said.
