After sowing death aboard his SUV during a festive parade in Waukesha, Darrell Brooks took refuge with an unsuspecting resident.
Daniel Rider was watching a football game on television when a stranger knocked on his door Sunday in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Ignoring everything about the drama that had just unfolded in the city center, the resident found himself facing a “thin person, who seemed to be cold”. He then remembered what his mother often told him about people in need. “I thought to myself that this was an opportunity for me to help someone. I wanted to warm him up and give him food, ”the American told CBS News.
Convinced that he was doing a good deed, Daniel Rider let Darrell Brooks into his home, who had just killed several people and injured dozens. After having installed his guest on the sofa, the inhabitant lent him a jacket, his phone and made him a sandwich. According to Daniel Rider, the visitor called his mother several times while waiting for an Uber to pick him up. “He was very polite. He was nice to me. He listened to everything I told him to do, ”recalls the American.
To make matters worse, Darrell Brooks innocently asked his host if he knew what had happened in town. Daniel Rider having lent his phone to his surprise guest, he did not see the alerts that appeared in a burst on his screen. Ten minutes after Brooks arrived at his home, the Good Samaritan began to stress when he saw a police car coming and going around. Sensing that something was wrong, the man finally asked the visitor to leave.
The perpetrator of the killing was arrested soon after, as can be seen from footage from Daniel Rider’s surveillance camera. A minute after the 30-something’s arrest, his Uber arrived at the scene. The inhabitant is slowly recovering from his emotions: “Now, knowing what he had done just before, I find it hard to realize.”
