Micromania is controversial with its rental offers for PS5 and Nintendo Switch

On paper, Micromania’s new rental offerings may look interesting. To avoid having to take out a large sum when buying your console, why not spread the payments over several months, a bit like Microsoft’s Xbox All Access? To make its offers attractive, Micromania also offers the benefit of several controllers and insures everything against breakage and breakdown. An intriguing new economic model for the world of video games, which could have been a good deal.

However, as many players noticed on Tuesday, the prices of Micromania’s offers end up being turned against the lessor in any case. In addition to paying for their consoles at a much higher rate than the market, they must ultimately return it, without the possibility of migrating to another console. Often mocked for its prices, Micromania is once again in turmoil for its offer which is all about the bad deal of the month.

769 euros for a PS5 … which does not belong to you

Take the example of the PS5. Micromania offers three offers:

  • Starter package (2 years): 69.99 euros + 23 rents of 17.49 euros = 472,26 euros, with the obligation to return the console.

  • Pro Gamer package (2 years, two controllers, pass guarantee and breakage guarantee): 69.99 euros + 23 rents of 24.99 euros = 644,76 euros, with the obligation to return the console.

  • Pro Gamer + package (3 years, two controllers, pass guarantee and breakage guarantee, possibility of migrating to a possible PS5 Slim) : 1st payment of 69.99 euros + 35 rents of 19.99 euros = 769,64 euros, with the obligation to return the console.

On purchase, the PlayStation 5 costs 499 euros. At the end of the rental, subscribers to the last two offers will therefore have paid for their console at a much higher rate than that offered by Sony, especially since they will not keep it. In the case of the first offer, the user will have saved about twenty euros… but will have thrown money down the drain, then he will have to buy a new console or renew the subscription. Incidentally, Micromania does not guarantee its rental companies to double the queue. The PS5 will therefore arrive in several months.

A Switch and Joy-Con for more than 500 euros

On the Nintendo Switch side, we are surprised to see Micromania offer a rental offer for a console about to be replaced. The console is usually sold around 300 euros and will also cost much more if you go through Micromania:

  • Starter package (18 months): 44.99 euros + 17 rents of 17.49 euros = 342,32 euros, with the obligation to return the console.
  • Package Plus (24 months, a pair of Joy-Con, guarantee pass, guarantee breakage): 64.99 euros + 23 rents of 19.99 euros = 524,76 euros, with the obligation to return the console.

Once again, Micromania’s offer is a very bad deal. At such a price, you might as well buy it and spread the payments over several times.

Also to discover in video:

For now, Micromania has not responded to the controversy. The brand prefers to respond to its detractors by indicating that it is still possible to buy the console if desired. In view of bad buzz caused by this operation, we wouldn’t be surprised (and we hope) for Micromania’s business model to evolve, perhaps by offering players to keep the console at the end of the engagement?
