Fancy a new iPad? Here’s a good reason to wait until 2022

In 2020, there was a sudden surge in demand for tablets. Indeed, with the massive use of teleworking and distance learning, the demand for this type of product has increased.

For its part, Apple has made significant improvements to the iPad. With the iPad Air 4, the firm has offered a high-performance chip, the A14 Bionic, as well as a new design. And with the iPad Pro of 2021, the Cupertino company has gone the extra mile by equipping these models with the same M1 chip as the latest Macs and using a mini-LED screen on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

And normally, Apple should continue to evolve the iPad. The next innovation may well be the adoption of OLED displays for some models. As a reminder, iPhones (except the iPhone SE) are already equipped with OLED screens, and for a while, rumors have suggested that this technology could also be used for the iPad.

Today, this is becoming clearer. Indeed, an article from GSMArena, which relays the Korean publication The Elec, indicates that Apple should start offering iPads with OLED screens from 2022. However, this transition would be gradual. Thus, it is possible that only an iPad from 2022 benefits from OLED technology.

This is said to be due to the fact that Apple’s display suppliers will not be able to immediately meet the demand. Also, the idea would be to give these suppliers time to increase their production capacities of OLED screens to cover all iPad models. Indeed, Apple sells tens of millions of iPads per year. Logically, the suppliers will be the same as those of the iPhone screens: Samsung, LG and BOE.

Technology superior to LCD screens

According to GSMArena, to decide this switch from the iPad to OLED technologies, Apple would have taken into account several parameters, including weight, design, as well as image quality. However, it should be noted that OLED screens can also extend the autonomy of a device, when it has a dark mode.

Of course, for the moment, these are still just rumors. And therefore, caution remains in order. But what is clear is that Apple intends to continue to innovate on the tablet market, as we could see during the presentation of the latest iPad Pro.

And given that demand for this product category is on the rise, Apple has an interest in staying competitive. Indeed, rumors are already circulating about future competitors of the iPad, equipped with high-end chips, which would be developed by the Chinese brand Xiaomi. For its part, Samsung sees its tablets growing in popularity. In 2020, the Korean giant saw a rise of more than 44% of its shipments (but Apple remains number 1).
