“Researchers often claim that the phrase ‘I have read and agree to the terms and conditions’ is the biggest lie on the internet.” It is systematic, when we connect to an online service or an application, we must agree to the general conditions of use of these services in which we get lost. The Field Systems studio imagined a digital character, a sort of virtual companion, which would help us see more clearly. In this project of the future, our companion who looks like a small digital bibendum would be visible in augmented reality, on a tablet for example, and would tackle the opacity of all these regulations thanks to artificial intelligence. Our little 3D avatar would help us protect our interests online – a permanent companion to act independently of any brand or platform. The complex jargon used in online regulations that we accept with closed eyes would be translated into more understandable language and quickly highlight the privacy concerns of disagreements over our values. Our digital companion would alert us to the risky apps we use. It’s the look and shape of our digital companion that would alert us. Building on the fact that we have already let digital assistants come into our house, this app would explore what it means to “live with more embodied Artificial Intelligence” to help us choose who and what to trust online.
