According to a report by Korean media outlet ETNews, Apple will use OLED screens instead of current LCDs in some iPads in 2022. This display technology has already been used on iPhones for several years, but Apple had not until then. not taken the plunge on its shelves.

Current iPads use LCD screens, which require backlighting. Recently, the Californian giant presented a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021 with a mini-LED screen, which greatly improves the brightness of its tablets. Since its release, users have posted videos of its screen. Although it uses a more advanced technology than the classic LCD, this one does not appear to be free from flaws.

Indeed, some users noticed that their device suffered from pronounced blooming. It is spots that appear around items visible on the screen against a black background, such as text or buttons. As the YouTuber ZONEofTECH shows it in video, it would be especially visible on applications such as YouTube. Blooming is a classic LCD flaw, but it seems particularly present on the 2021 iPad Pro, which however uses more backlighting areas than a classic iPad.

An OLED iPad to correct the defects of LCD screens?

According to ETNews, Apple has decided to switch to OLED on the next generation iPad, because this technology offers better image quality and deeper blacks. OLED panels are also not prone to blooming. Since it does not use a backlight, it also reduces the weight of the tablet, but also its thickness. As a result, the design of the next iPad may need to change.

ETNews does not specify which model of iPad would be affected by this change in 2022, but according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it could be the mid-range iPad Air. ETNews specifies, however, that by 2023, the entire range of Apple iPads will be equipped with an OLED display. It is therefore expected that future iPad Pros will also offer this type of panel. The report confirms the information from leaker @MauriQHD, who had already mentioned the subject at the beginning of the year.

Samsung, for its part, has been offering OLED screens on its tablets for several years now. The Korean manufacturer will also unveil three new models within a few months, including the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. This new high-end tablet will likely be the ultimate Android tablet, as it offers a 14.6-inch 120 Hz OLED screen, a 12,000 mAh compatible 45 W battery, up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, four speakers and an S Pen.
