Samsung wants to introduce a cloud gaming platform for its TVs

Samsung announced that they are preparing their own cloud gaming platform for their smart TVs with the Tizen operating system. The South Koreans announced that owners of Samsung televisions will “soon” be able to enjoy games without having to spend money on separate hardware. However, there are still many questions unanswered for the time being.

Samsung, for example, kept it open as to which publishers and developers could be brought on board as partners. This is very important, because even Google cannot yet rely on Stadia that all Triple A games will actually end up there – for example, the recently published “Guardians of the Galaxy” is not represented at Stadia either.

So I wonder how Samsung is trying to attract publishers. However, you are under pressure: Things are currently looking bleak for your own TV operating system when it comes to cloud gaming. There are z. B. Users of Android TV better on the go thanks to Stadia support. Samsung experimented with cloud gaming very early on, because Gaikai was brought on board as early as 2012 and offered an app for its smart TVs. However, the whole thing went a bit unfortunate, because Sony grabbed Gaikai to use his technologies for PlayStation Now to adapt.

Let’s see, cloud gaming is currently still a niche, but in the long term there is definitely a chance of replacing traditional consoles at some point. Microsoft and Sony also have that with that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PlayStation Now already have their projects. And then there is Nvidia with GeForce Now – recently upgraded with the new RTX 3080 tariff. Therefore, Samsung could have a hard time attracting customers with its own platform. Maybe we’ll find out on the THOSE 2022 in January next year for more details. Then it will be easier to assess the potential chances of success.
