Oppo is laying off numerous employees after consolidating with OnePlus

Oppo and OnePlus have merged several departments. It was advertised as a sensible way to unite the energies of both companies and emerge stronger from them. Both brands should benefit from joint research and development, it said. This has also led to OnePlus already using ColorOS as a surface in China. But as it is with amalgamations: This also uncovered potential savings. Therefore, Oppo is now laying off employees.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Oppo is laying off 20% of its employees in key software and hardware departments. The layoffs are also said to be the result of rapid expansion. Among other things, employees from the ColorOS team and the IoT group, which works on headphones, smartwatches and fitness trackers, are also being laid off. Oppo itself has not publicly commented on the consolidation measures.

It is said that Oppo was aggressively seeking to expand in markets such as India, Southeast Asia and Europe, but has so far not been able to achieve the success it had hoped for. This was blocked, for example, by fierce competition from Xiaomi. I’m not really surprised either, because Oppo builds good smartphones, at least in Germany they seem quite expensive in terms of price-performance ratio.

The conquest of the smartwatch market has also failed so far, where the international market share is below one percent. As for headphones, stuck at 1.7%. Obviously, Oppo attacked on too many fronts at the same time.
