The French rugby union federation has three months to complete its application. The decision will be taken by international bodies in November for the World Cup organized in England.
France is officially a candidate to organize the Rugby Union World Cup scheduled for fall 2025. The announcement was made Thursday by Luc Lacoste, the president of the French federation. A steering committee is already at work around Michel Wiener, a regular at the organization of major events, who has been appointed executive director. The case seems well underway. The IRL, the international federation, has in fact entrusted an exclusive mandate to the French federation of XIII. “It means that we are alone in contention. The IRI would like to announce at the start of the next World Cup scheduled for November in England, the name of the organizing country of the next edition ”indicates Luc Lacoste.
A hundred matches in sight
Mobilized for several weeks, the federation has not been idle. The DIJES (Interministerial Delegation for Major Sporting Events which depends on the State) has just given it its support. “This World Cup will take place after the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics, two major events that will take place in France” recalls Luc Lacoste.
The steering committee wants to make it a “sport for all” event with four competitions organized at the same time in France: men, women, wheelchair and young people. “We want to bring together sixteen nations per category, which means a hundred matches,” indicates Michel Wiener. We will need stadiums of all sizes, small ones with less than 5,000 seats and larger ones with 50,000, especially for the final and the opening match. ”Contacts have already been made with communities and the Federation must launch an appeal for expressions of interest to find the stadiums that will host this competition. Luc Lacoste wants to rely on the Treizist strongholds: “I am thinking of our historic lands. I find it hard to see Occitanie not being interested in a World Cup. I am thinking of Toulouse which wants to launch a city of rugby, of Perpignan, of Carcassonne. But we will also go to the Paca, Auvergen Rhône-Alpes and Nouvelle Aquitaine regions ”.
The 2025 World Cup will be used to promote the XIII beyond its bastions, in Paris, even in cities where this rugby is not established. The future budget has not yet been announced but it could approach € 40 million (budget for the World Cup organized in England this autumn). Fifty years later, the French treizers hope to once again host the supreme competition. A World Cup created in 1954 by Paul Barrière … a French!
