Vaimalama Chaves, Miss France 2019, was in Pornichet (Loire-Atlantique) on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 July 2021. Interview.
Vaimalama, what brings you to the La Baule region?
As part of the release of my album, we have organized a tour this summer with dates all over the Atlantic coast and we are in transit at Pornichet before the next date tomorrow evening near Poitiers (Wednesday 7th at La Peyratte, at Parthenay Editor’s note). I do not know the area and I am very happy to be here. We were in Nantes yesterday at Machines de l’île with the Elephant and it was really good.
Is this your first tour?
Yes and it’s a road trip-style tour that we do in a converted van, which suits us well, close to people and nature. Even if a bubble of comfort from time to time, as here at the Château des Tourelles, is very appreciable! We do this tour with ease, like at the dam opposite Mont-Saint-Michel the other day, where I took out my amp, my guitar, my ukulele and my microphone, I sat down and sang. For me, music is shared and it is a privileged moment to create a bond.
Would you be tempted to write your own songs?
Yes it would please me a lot to discover this art of lyricist. I have so much to say: about love, in all its forms, about the passage of time. I also have lots of other ideas in mind around music, travel, discovery, sharing.
Have you always been passionate?
In Polynesia, music is part of our culture. We have musical notes in our blood. We sing, we dance all the time. I didn’t think I would make it my job. Thanks to Miss France, I had the chance to meet people from the field but I also knew how to trigger opportunities. It is the domino effect, luck is provoked.
How did you adjust your plans with the crisis?
The album was released in December 2020 but didn’t have the chance to really exist. So I set up this tour, and I plan to start again this winter by going to sing in the mountains to promote the album and to discover unknown regions through a blog. You can do 100 km and totally change your culture. This is what is interesting in mainland France.
What do you remember from your year of Miss France?
It is above all the value of sharing. As Miss France, you become the ambassador of all French people, and you have to give your all. You gain a lot of maturity and you have to know how to go beyond the difficulties. I also continue to bring the cause against harassment in general, but especially school, with in particular the association “Marion la main tendue”. Children are unarmed in the face of incessant bullying, and the message must be conveyed to both children and parents.
How do you share between Polynesia and the metropolis? What do you miss the most ?
What I miss most is the sea over there. Mangoes and papayas too! Even though the strawberries here are very good! Last year, we went there for the two summer months (with Nicolas Fleury, his companion, engineer and high-level sportsman in mountain biking trial, editor’s note) and I was able to take advantage of family and friends. I was there two weeks ago also for the election of Miss Tahiti 2021 and it allowed me to recharge my batteries. But I am generally more in France because of my professional activities.
The album Good Vaïbes was released in December 2020, and consists of 7 covers and 7 original songs. After Parthenay, the tour continues this Friday July 9 in Lacanau, the 12 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the 14 in Biarritz
