In Catalonia, a festive and touristy province in Spain, the epidemic situation has become worrying. In total, 5,379 new cases of Covid-19 were identified on Monday, July 5. The Catalan government has announced that nightclubs will have to close.
The discos reopened only two weeks ago in Catalonia (Spain). They will already have to close the weekend of Saturday, July 10, because the number of Covid-19 contaminations is skyrocketing. Nearly 5,000 new cases on average are thus recorded every day in this region of 7.5 million inhabitants.
For the Catalan government, there is an urgent need to tighten the noose. “The infection numbers are bad, very bad, even. And the speed of spread is bad too. That’s why we need to take action to limit interactions.”, said Patricia Plaja, spokesperson for the Government of Catalonia. The government is therefore targeting nightclubs, because young people are by far the most affected; they are four times more than the average. And for good reason: those under 30 have only had access to vaccination for a week. In areas where they can get vaccinated, young people flock to the centers.
