The 74th Cannes Film Festival begins Tuesday July 6, almost two months late. Usually organized in mid-May, the pandemic forced the organizers to postpone the date, after the outright cancellation in 2020. If the health situation is still precarious and requires some restrictions, the idea is to propose an almost normal festival
No question of imposing the mask on film crews on the red carpet. There will be a lot of photographers and crowds for the opening of the festival. However, for the rest, this 74th edition will be very special.

Wearing a mask will be compulsory in the Palais des Festivals and in the screening rooms, with registration essential in advance for press screenings. This is a first, with smaller gauges than usual. The health pass is also required. Tents have been set up near the Palace to be tested.
Despite this, the festival’s general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, wants to prove that “The festival, as a place of culture, of cinema, can take place under normal conditions which allow cinema to come back into our lives. This is already the case since people are rushing into the theaters.”
“We have to prove that we can have a great event.”Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes festival
Like the Avignon festival, which is held in parallel, Thierry Frémaux wants “show that we know how to live with this virus but that we must not give up either, to over-insecure health. We must be intelligent, reasonable and responsible.”
Ultimately, the consequences will be much more visible late at night. Cannes festivals will be very small, with even more confidential invitations, when they will not be canceled as a precaution. They will not have the same pomp in 2021.
