He was one of the favorites of this Tour de France 2021. Primoz Roglic, second in the last edition, will not take the start, Sunday July 4, of the 9th stage of the Grande Boucle between Cluses (Haute-Savoie) and Tignes (Savoy). “He suffers too much from his injuries”, announced its Team Jumbo-Visma cycling team in a press release.
The 31-year-old runner says he wants “to recover and (to) turn to new objectives” : “I tried to be focused on the present moment, to go through the days one after the other, but after a few days I saw that it was not getting me anywhere and that it didn’t make sense to continue. . “
The Slovenian rider had suffered a heavy fall during the 3rd stage. It was “open everywhere” on the left side on its own terms. “I didn’t think this fall would cause me to quit. I never look that far. After a few days, I saw that I was not making any progress in my recovery.”, said the rider of the Jumbo-Visma.

After his fall, Roglic limited the breakage in the time trial on Wednesday in Laval, where he gave up only 44 seconds to the dominating Pogacar. But he paid the price for his injuries, multiple bruises, in the long stage (249 km) leading to Le Creusot (Saône-et-Loire) on Friday, before finishing very late, in the “gruppetto”, the first stage of mountain in Grand-Bornand. After eight stages, on Saturday July 3, he occupied 51st place in the general classification, almost 40 minutes from Pogacar, the new yellow jersey for this edition.
“I have to try to recover now. I am disappointed of course but I have to accept it and remain optimistic”, stressed the Slovenian. Very close to winning the 2020 edition of the Tour, Roglic had saved himself this season for the Grande Boucle and the road race of the Olympic Games, scheduled for July 24. Hoping the 31-year-old cyclist will be well by then.
