FIRE FIGHTERS – 250 firefighters, six canadairs and three Dash are mobilized in the Clape massif, where a major fire broke out at the end of the morning. The flames spread over 200 hectares. Three estates and a campsite located nearby were evacuated in a preventive manner.

A fire of a significant intensity broke out this Saturday, July 3, shortly after noon on the edge of the departmental 638, in the Clape massif, near Narbonne-Plage. According to Lieutenant Colonel Eric Felten, head of the Codis de l’Aude site, contacted directly by LCI, “It’s a fiery fire that spreads pretty quickly.” 17 hours, “the fire had already covered 200 hectares of vegetation.”

“We have carried out preventive evacuations of three estates and a campsite, which represents around 150 people and at present we have put on each of the threatened dwellings land resources on the ground to protect them”, continued the Lieutenant. Some 140 people were evacuated, as well as around 30 people residing in homes. These dwellings have been preserved.

The Narbonne-Plage road is temporarily closed to traffic and the emergency services are asking residents to stay away from the fire to facilitate their intervention.

480 firefighters mobilized

According to information communicated by civil security, 200 firefighters from sdis 11 and 280 firefighters in extra departmental reinforcements and a detachment of rescuers are currently mobilized to extinguish the fire. As well as six canadairs, four dash, a heavy water bomber helicopter. “As I speak to you, approximately 90 drops have been carried out”, said Lieutenant Colonel Eric Felten at the microphone of LCI.

The Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin posted his support on Twitter for the firefighters and recommend that residents near the fire remain vigilant. The President of the Occitania region, Carole Delga, also provided support to the rescuers and her “thoughts to the inhabitants, winegrowers and lovers of this emblematic natural space of the Occitan coast.”

For the moment no information on the origin of the fire has been communicated.
