Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov said on Monday that he will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics, citing reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 12th-ranked player in the world, the Ontarian revealed his intentions on his Twitter account two days after his elimination in the semi-finals of the Queen’s tournament.
“After some serious thought, I want to let you know that I will not be competing in the Olympics this year. Representing Canada means everything to me, but due to the current situation, I and my team have determined that this is the best decision for everyone’s safety, ”Shapovalov wrote.
The latter will be in action at Wimbledon next week.
