Belgium, a former colonial power, and the DRC had agreed to return on June 21 to the family of the national hero of Congolese independence a “relic” – in fact a single tooth – of Mr. Lumumba during a ceremony in Brussels , chaired by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. Mr. Tshisekedi was expected for the occasion in Belgium at the head of a Congolese delegation and should have met King Philippe.

A tour with these relics was then planned in the towns of Lumumba-ville (in the province of Sankuru, central DRC), Kisangani (north-east) and Shilatembo (Haut-Katanga, in the south-east), where Mr. Lumumba was assassinated in January 1961, a few months after the independence of the former Belgian Congo, in circumstances which remained obscure but in the presence of Belgian officials.
