“Worse than the sound of boots, that of slippers”, can we read on one of the signs posted on Place Saint-Roch in Mont-de-Marsan this Saturday, June 12. About 70 people gathered, with the goal of “sensitize” against far-right ideas. A week before the regional and departmental elections, these activists are worried. In an Ipsos-Sopra-Steria poll for France Bleu and France 3, the candidate list of the National Rally for the regional in New Aquitaine is given first at the end of the first round.
This day came from a national call from several left-wing organizations to come together all over France. “It is above all a call for awareness of the risk posed by far-right ideas to French society”, explains Gérard Kerforn, co-president of the Movement against Racism and for Friendship between Peoples (MRAP) in the Landes.
“The Landes do not escape this deleterious climate”, replies Flavien Thomas at the microphone. He is high-secretary of the Unitary Union Federation (FSU) in the Landes. The latter shares the observation of these “comrades” and worries about a rise of the extreme right in France. “The far-right parties remain made up of extremists, long-standing enemies of democratic values”, he adds.
“I am here to resist this kind of pressure from far-right parties, it was important to me to be present”, explains Marie Jo, an activist present at the rally. Behind her round glasses, this woman wants to show her opposition to the far right. For her it is necessary that a “citizen gets involved in civic life”.
Further on among those present, there is Christian accompanied by his wife. Both came today without hesitation. “If we leave the door open to the far right, that means we leave the door open to everything”, he regrets. This call is only a first step, the organizers of this gathering want to continue to mobilize in the weeks to come.
