Stuck in Mali, France begins a gradual withdrawal. Operation Barkhane, as an external operation, will cease, Emmanuel Macron announced this Thursday. More than 5,000 men are now mobilized in Mali and the Sahel region. But faced with an endless war against jihadists, and after the recent coup d’état in Mali, it is time for Paris to withdraw gradually and find a new model.
Emmanuel Macron : “It (this new model) will involve the transition to a new framework to allow an operation of support, support and cooperation, to the armies of the countries of the region which so wish, and the implementation of a military operation and an international alliance bringing together the States of the region and all our partners, strictly focused on the fight against terrorism “.
The French President also spoke, without naming them, of “States which refuse to assume their responsibilities”.
In addition, and this is a point that strongly irritated the French, the new Malian leader, Colonel Goïta, would consider negotiating directly with Al Quaïda.
In the Sahel, a European army training mission is already supported by several countries and Paris intends to rally others. But the work will continue especially in the fight against terrorism, within the framework ofa force called Takuba, of which France will remain the backbone, at least until 2030, with several hundred soldiers.
