Belgium condemns “with the greatest firmness“The violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in particular in Ituri and North Kivu, Foreign Affairs said on Saturday. It is supporting a support project for transitional justice.

Belgium underlines in particular the serious violations of human rights which particularly affect the civilian population and contribute to the worsening of the humanitarian situation in the region. “It is crucial to put an end to the activity of these armed groups and to bring those responsible for these serious violations to justice.“, underline the authorities.”Human rights and the fight against impunity are at the heart of the priorities of Belgian foreign policy and development cooperation.

Belgium has therefore just provided support for a support project in the field of transitional justice, the fight against impunity and protection developed by the Joint United Nations Office for Human Rights (UNJHRO) in the DRC. , of which Belgium is one of the main donors, explains Foreign Affairs. It provides for support for the establishment of a transitional justice commission as well as for the strengthening of the judicial system, accompanied by support for provincial processes in seven provinces (including North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri).

The project includes support for victims of violence and serious crimes but also support for the reintegration process of ex-combatants and militiamen and their participation in the transitional justice process.

The violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo has? destroy too many innocent lives“, underlines the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès.”This is why we continue to deploy actions in favor of peace. During her tenure on the UN Security Council and even today, Belgium pleaded for a more operational United Nations mission (MONUSCO) and more attentive to the protection of civilians. We have also contributed to the recent UN strategy for the Great Lakes in order to cut the resources of armed groups. The Congolese authorities can count on our support in their efforts to bring stability to the region and protect the populations.
