Two weeks after the start of the school year, many students have already been sent home. According to a press release from the Ministry of National Education unveiled this Friday evening, 14,380 classes are closed due to the excessive number of cases of infected students and even now, faced with the explosion of Omicron, the absence of teachers or staff.
This represents nearly 3% of classes. It is in Île-de-France that we find the largest number of closed classes with 2,599 closures for the Créteil academy and 2,116 for that of Versailles. That of Grenoble (803 closed classes) completes this, sad, podium. Eight days ago, 9,202 were closed in the country.
At least 331,715 students (including 75,000 in the past 24 hours) have tested positive. But this figure, which is based solely on the voluntary declarations of the “interested parties”, is probably very underestimated. More than 25,500 National Education staff have also reported a Covid-10 infection over the past seven days. Nationwide, at least 226 schools, including 194 schools, are completely closed.
Demonstration, strike and new protocol
Figures which also sum up a week under very high tension around schools. Teachers and other National Education staff, exasperated by the waltz of health protocols linked to Covid-19, went on massive strike on Thursday and demonstrated to demand progress from the government, which promised them FFP2 masks and substitutes.
Nearly 78,000 people (77,500) had demonstrated in France on Thursday, including 8,200 in Paris, according to the Ministry of the Interior, at the call of all the national education unions, who denounced “a mess indescribable” due to health protocols.
Indeed, before that, Monday evening, Jean Castex (the Prime Minister) had announced a simplification of the protocol for the fight against the coronavirus in schools. The third in a week and especially since the start of the school year on January 3. Easing announced on Monday: for pupils with contact cases, screening carried out on D-0 can now be done using a self-test, and no longer by an antigen or PCR as requested until then. Finally, only one screening certificate will be requested from parents, against one for each negative test so far.
