Four people were arrested after the very violent assault of which a couple was the victim on May 24 (Whit Monday) in the Panier district of Marseille. It is 11 pm when a man and his companion are attacked for no apparent reason by a group of five individuals on the forecourt of the Cathedral of La Major. Badly beaten in a great outburst of violence, the man was transported to the North Hospital with a life-threatening prognosis and placed in an artificial coma. He suffers from multiple fractures and bruises mainly on the face and back. This Tuesday, he came out of a coma and his days are no longer in danger. His companion was not injured because she had managed to escape at the time of the assault.

Investigators quickly traced the trail to five suspects thanks to the” CCTV camera analysis. Placed in police custody, four men admitted to having been present at the scene. They were all remanded in custody. One of them, aged 20, also admitted having been the author of the vast majority of the violence. A fifth suspect is still wanted.
The hearings show the purely gratuitous nature of the assault. The attackers had also consumed alcohol, drugs and nitrous oxide. This so-called “hilarious” gas is frequently diverted for its euphoric effects. Parliament recently banned “its misuse”.
