Malicious individuals caused significant material damage estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars when they entered a stone quarry between Saint-Gabriel-de-Rimouski and Saint-Marcellin.
The facts occurred on the night of May 26 to 27, in a quarry located on Route 234, on the border between the two municipalities of Bas-Saint-Laurent.
According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), one or more individuals attacked the heavy machinery and equipment that was on the scene.
“We are talking about shattered windows on excavators and other vehicles, and fires that were started in trailers that contained various industrial equipment,” explains SQ spokesperson Claude Doiron.
The spill of a few hundred liters of petroleum product after one of the fires heavily contaminated the soil. Emergency Environment technicians had to go to the scene to decontaminate the area.
In total, the damage is estimated at a few hundred thousand dollars, including the costs related to decontamination, specifies the provincial police force.
The latter therefore asks the public for help to gather information in order to advance the ongoing investigation in this case.
Any information that could identify the perpetrators of these acts can be communicated confidentially to the Criminal Information Center of the Sûreté du Québec at 1 800 659-4264.
