Sunday 23 May 2021, the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts (Seine-Maritime) realized that the board by the Flemish painter Otto Van Veen, had faded away of its exhibitions, reveal our colleagues from Octopus.

No trace of break-in

“A painting of 15 x 20 centimeters, entitled Even wisdom does not escape time, was indeed stolen, ”indicates a judicial source. It is estimated at a value of 30,000 euros.

The police did not notice any signs of breaking into the museum. “The painting must have been stolen during opening hours. In view of the small size of the table, it does not seem impossible that a visitor has slipped it in his bag ”, underlines the same judicial source.

The judicial police in charge of the investigation

An investigation was opened and was entrusted to a specialized service for works of art of the territorial directorate of the judicial police of Rouen (DTPJ). For its part, the Metropolis of Rouen Normandy, confirms that “a theft is indeed to be deplored” and that “an investigation is underway”. “It is to respond to the formal request of the police and the ministry that no communication was made,” said the Metropolis.
