The Liegeois lost in three sets (6-0, 7-5, 7-6).
David Goffin was eliminated in the first round of Roland-Garros on Monday in Paris. Goffin, 13th player in the world and seeded N.13, lost 6-0, 7-5 and 7-6 (7/3) against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 76). The meeting lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes.
For the second year in a row, Goffin therefore takes the door in the first round of the French Open after a defeat against a young Italian. After Jannik Sinner last year, the executioner of Liégeois is called this year Lorenzo Musetti, 19 years old.
Faced with a nervous Goffin, Musetti flew over the first set 6-0. The second set was more contested. Goffin even offered a set point at 4-5 on his opponent’s serve. But the Belgian N.1 did not convert this opportunity. Musetti grabbed Goffin’s next face-off and went on to win the second set 7-5.
In the third set, Musetti converted a break point to lead 2-1. After six missed break points, Goffin finally managed to take the throw-in from Musetti to pick up at 5-5. We then witnessed a new break from Musetti followed by a counterbreak from Goffin. The set continued in the tie-break where Musetti emerged 7/3.
Goffin’s 10th Roland-Garros therefore ends in the first round, as in 2013, 2014 and 2020. The quarter-finals reached in 2016 are his best result in Paris.
In the second round, Musetti will face the French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (ATP 77) or the Japanese Nishioka (ATP 57).
