The storm that hit the Marmara region in northwestern Turkey on Monday and Tuesday left five dead and 63 injured, the Turkish Minister of Health announced on Tuesday evening.

Winds reaching 130 km / h had uprooted trees on Monday, blown roofs and caused the collapse of minarets and clock towers in several cities in the Marmara region, including Istanbul.

Despite a decrease in their intensity, strong winds continued to blow over the region on Tuesday, causing disruptions in air traffic and the closure of schools for the day in several localities.

In total, “five people lost their lives and 63 others were injured in the disaster caused by the Libeccio storm in the Marmara region,” Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter.

Images posted on social media and Turkish media showed a roof and veranda blowing away in the wind, as well as heavy goods vehicles lying on an expressway near Istanbul.
