The long-awaited sanction fell Thursday afternoon. Lausanne HC captain Mark Barberio received eight suspension matches for his violent gesture last Saturday in Zurich (cane in Garrett Roe’s face and fractured jaw for the Zurich striker) as well as a fine of 11 700 francs.

The Player Safety Officer (PSO) had recommended a category II suspension (2 to 4 matches) but the single judge increased the price by moving the offense to category III, a minimum of five matches. For the repeat offense, Barberio was again given three more matches in suspension, bringing the overall penalty to eight matches.

The Canadian player was already sanctioned four times last season and served eight suspension matches in total (four of which were postponed to the start of this year).

Before his slip in Zurich on Saturday, however, Barberio had only suffered four minor penalties in 14 appearances this season.
