New Kia Niro available as an electric car & part-time Stromer

Kia has presented the new generation of the Niro. The next model year of the crossover starts in the coming year and will, as before, be offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric drive. “With its environmentally friendly materials, advanced technologies and electrified drives, the new Kia Niro facilitates a sustainable lifestyle while at the same time meeting the practical needs of customers,” says Kia boss Ho Sung Song.

According to Kia, the new Niro has been completely redesigned and influenced by the Habaniro study presented in 2019. The wide C-pillars, which also help to optimize the airflow, merge into the boomerang-shaped taillights at the rear. “Their characteristic vertical design underlines the aerodynamics and technology orientation of the new Niro and at the same time emphasizes the visual breadth and stability of the crossover with its powerful shoulders. The rear also looks modern and attractive because it combines simply designed surfaces with dynamic sections, ”they say.

The typical Kia “tiger face” has been further developed for the new Niro and now extends below the bonnet over the entire width of the front bumper. The side end of the front design is formed by the LED daytime running lights in the form of a “heartbeat curve”.

In the interior, the use of new recycled materials underscores the commitment to sustainability and provides an indication of future model development, explains Kia. The headliner is made of recycled wallpaper material, the seats are made of bio-polyurethane with Tencel made from eucalyptus leaves. The paint used for the door panels is free of benzene, toluene and xylene isomers.

In the asymmetrical design of the dashboard, horizontal and diagonal lines are juxtaposed. The central console is designed to be user-friendly, the electronic rotary control for the transmission control is located on a large, glossy black surface. The infotainment screen and the ventilation nozzles are integrated into the dashboard with trapezoidal bezels. Ambient lighting should underline “the inviting character” of the interior. “The seats, which are particularly slim, also contribute to its generosity, comfort and elegance. This also applies to the headrests, which also have practical coat hangers integrated into the back, ”says Kia.

The plug-in hybrid and hybrid versions of the next Niro have a new “Greenzone Drive Mode”, which can automatically switch the drive system to fully electric operation depending on the battery charge – for example when driving in environmental zones in residential areas or nearby from schools and hospitals. The system switches to electric mode on the basis of navigation instructions and historical driving data if the driver has defined Greenzone Drive Mode as a preference in the settings. As a green zone, it also recognizes places that are frequently visited, such as the driver’s home or workplace, which are stored in the navigation system.

There is still no official information on batteries and motors in the electrified new Niro models. The expiring purely electric generation is optionally available with 100 kW (136 PS) drive power with a 39 kWh battery pack for a range of 289 kilometers according to WLTP and with a 150 kW motor (204 PS) with a 64 kWh battery for 455 kilometers per charge. The part-time Stromer is only available in one version. The electric car costs from 38,290 euros, the plug-in hybrid but 34,190 euros and the hybrid from 27,490 euros.
