Covid-19: EMA approves vaccine for children aged five and over

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends approval for the corona vaccine from the manufacturer Biontech / Pfizer for children aged five to eleven. The EMA announced on Thursday in Amsterdam. It will be the first corona vaccine to be approved in the EU for children under the age of twelve. The responsible experts examined the data on the risks and effectiveness of the vaccine in children of this age group for a good two months. A recommendation from the STIKO is still pending.

The assessment was also based on data from a phase II / III clinical trial on the efficacy and safety of the vaccine. The children were immunized with a dose of 10 micrograms, while children twelve years of age and older and adults received 30 micrograms of the vaccine.

Now that the EMA experts have given the green light, the EU Commission still has to give its official approval – but this is considered a formality. In Germany, according to Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), 2.4 million doses of the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine would not be available for children until December 20.

By the end of the year at the latest, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) also wants to give its recommendation on corona vaccination for children from five to eleven years of age. “Our goal is to complete this recommendation by the end of December, if possible by the start of delivery of the children’s vaccine to the federal states,” said STIKO chairman Thomas Mertens on Wednesday to the newspapers of the Funke media group. The STIKO’s recommendation is currently in progress.

The vaccination commission is also concerned with receiving data on rare vaccination complications from other countries as a basis for its recommendation. In the USA, for example, smaller children have been immunized with the lower-dose active ingredient since November; according to US government information, around three million five to eleven year olds have received the first injection so far. The situation there and the state of health of the children in the USA are not directly comparable with Germany. According to the Science Media Center, vaccinations for children between the ages of five and eleven also started this week in Israel and Canada. (kas / dpa)
