He was a dandy rock from another time. Nicolas Ker, the singer of the French group Poni Hoax, died at the age of 50. An announcement made this Monday by the artist’s label, without giving the causes of this disappearance which mourns the underground scene of which he had become one of the spearheads, leading a life of excess as evidenced by the documentary Drunk in the House of Lords, released in 2009.

Born in Phnom Penh to a French father and a Cambodian mother who fled the country when the Khmer Rouge came to power, Nicolas Ker grew up between Egypt, Turkey and Réunion before settling in Paris in the age of 16. Fan of David Bowie and Jim Morrison, he sang in the bars of the capital for a long time before meeting the musician Laurent Bardainne with whom he formed Poni Hoax in the early 2000s.

A group that has become a cult

Mixing rock, disco and electro, the group will publish four albums from 2006 to 2017, with the hit “Antibodies” as a highlight, which has the honors of the Rock Band video game. But it is on stage, where Nicolas Ker summons the spirit of his idols of youth, that the formation forges a reputation which exceeds the borders of the Hexagon, with more than 200 concerts between New York, London and Moscow.

In recent years, the musicians of Poni Hoax had carried out projects on the fringes of the group, Laurent Bardainne notably signing the album LOST by Camélia Jordana, awarded at the Victoires de la musique. Nicola Ker had recorded a first solo album in 2016, The suburbs of exile. Then two amazing records with Arielle Dombasle, The Atlantic River and Empire, published last year.

Nicolas was the last of the rockers with the golden voice. He was the very figure of the rocker with a torn heart, of the incandescent poet, he had a Dionysian grace, a rare fine and beautiful being, we mourn him“, said Monday to AFP the one who had also entrusted to the singer the soundtrack of his film Alien Crystal Palace, in 2018.

The leader of Poni Hoax had also set the documentary to music Peshmerga by Bernard-Henri Lévy, in 2016. In a tweet, the philosopher confides “his great sadness“and greet”the fury of living between Dean and Gainsbourg“of the singer as well as”his evanescent presence from a Jim Jarmusch film“.
