The Unia union calls for demonstrations “for an increase in wages”. In construction, but not only.

Expect some problems in your travels in the center of Geneva this Saturday afternoon. A procession will parade from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. between Place Lise-Girardin (former Place des Vingt-Deux-Cantons) and Place Neuve, with a stop and speeches on the Pont du Mont-Blanc. The demonstration – national but decentralized in several cities in Switzerland – is called by the Unia union to demand in particular an increase in wages. In French-speaking Switzerland, Geneva was chosen as the meeting place.

“Wages have been burning for too long in Switzerland. What we are calling for today is a real revaluation of these. “

José Sebastião, union secretary of Unia in Geneva

“Wages have been burning for too long in Switzerland. What we are demanding today is a real upgrading of these, ”explains José Sebastião, union secretary of Unia in Geneva. While several collective labor agreements in the construction sector are in the process of being renegotiated at cantonal, regional or national levels, the union is putting pressure on it.

In addition to the salary increase mentioned – from 100 to 120 francs per month – trade unionists evoke the problems of subcontracting: “Subcontracting has exploded in recent years. At the end of the chain, it is sometimes the workers who are not paid, while the agent company washes its hands. We demand the application of joint and several liability of companies. ”

Appeal to the Council of State

One of the old union demands concerns the creation of a bad weather fund in Geneva. “We asked the State for the creation of a task force with the employers and the participation of the Canton in the financing of this fund, reveals José Sebastião, but we have not received any response so far. It’s about time we got one. ”

“For saleswomen or health workers, now is the time to take to the streets.”

Ana Gabriel Sabate, Deputy Regional Secretary of Unia.

According to the union secretary, the employers’ associations did not take action on any of the demands. Even worse, since they would advocate a freeze on wages, an increase in working time and more flexibility. And to conclude with the initiative of young PLR which intends to increase the retirement age: “We are at the disposal of these young people to find them work on the building sites. They will thus be able to experience the harshness of these trades and ask themselves if it is really possible to make these workers work longer. “

Wider claims

This Saturday, the catalog of demands will not be limited to the building alone. “It will indeed be an inter-professional event,” confirms Ana Gabriel Sabate, deputy regional secretary of Unia. For saleswomen or health workers, now is the time to take to the streets. They were applauded at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, but now they are being asked to work and accept that working conditions are deteriorating. ”

Note that the Syna union, the Socialist Party and SolidarityS all called to join the demonstration on Saturday.
