No segment of the population is growing faster in the city of Zurich than they are: annual residents, often also called expats. Between 1993 and 2020, the number of people with a B permit increased from 22,000 to 64,000. That is almost tripling. This group now makes up almost one in seven people in the city. At the same time, the proportion of people with a Swiss passport and those with a permanent residence permit (C permit) has fallen slightly.

Over a third of the expats come from neighboring countries, as statistics from the city of Zurich reported on Wednesday. As a rule, they are young, well educated, gainfully employed and live in a comparatively small area. On average, they stay in the city for about three years.
