Six residents died in connection with Corona in the «Dr Heimä» retirement center. The home staff usually did not wear a mask in the summer. According to the canton, this was not in accordance with the law.
In the “Dr Heimä” old age and care center, six residents died within two weeks in connection with Corona, as the “Luzerner Zeitung” reported. The cases have been confirmed by the health department.
In the summer, the home staff did not wear masks if the situation allowed. According to Daniel Kiefer, managing director, this was discussed with the residents without a dissenting vote.
According to the canton of Obwalden, this was not in accordance with the law.
The canton is now working with the old people’s home to prevent the virus from spreading further.
Since October 8th, six people have died in connection with Covid-19 in the elderly and care center “Dr Heimä”, as the “Luzerner Zeitung” reports. On the website of the old people’s home you can read in this regard: “Due to corona cases, our house is temporarily closed!” Daniel Kiefer, managing director, confirmed the corona cases to the “LZ”. Oliver Gerber, head of the cantonal health department, also says that these are laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases, with the cause of death being determined in each individual case by the treating doctor.
The cases sparked fierce criticism because the staff at the old people’s home refrained from wearing a mask at work last summer. Kiefer defends that: the situation allowed that at the time. In addition, he adds to the “LZ” that masks would impair verbal communication too much. Ultimately, it was agreed with the residents that they would not use masks, although the staff wore a mask when the situation dictated it.
The canton of Obwalden emphasizes, however, that the statutory mask requirement still applies to the nursing staff. The canton has never lifted it, as the health department continues. According to Kiefer, the deaths mentioned are due to breakthroughs in the vaccination, with the majority of residents having been vaccinated for a long time. The canton denies the claim that all deaths are vaccination breakthroughs: “This is a false statement. So far there have been six confirmed Covid deaths in the retirement center. Two people were vaccinated and four were not vaccinated. ”
The canton is currently working with the retirement home to get the outbreaks under control. Therefore, outbreak management is currently being used to contain the spread of the virus. Tests, contact tracing and quarantine are used for this.
