Alec Baldwin shot gun, camerawoman died: what happened?

A fatal incident occurred while filming in Santa Fe. Actor Alec Baldwin or the crew need not have acted negligently.

US actor Alec Baldwin shot a prop gun while shooting a film, and two people were hit. The 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins died, director Joel Souza (48) was injured and is being treated in a hospital, the police said.

What has happened still raises many questions. Investigators would interview eyewitnesses, it said. Among other things, the weapon, a film prop, will be examined. According to the police, no criminal charges have been made so far.

The accident occurred on Thursday while filming the western “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico. Baldwin is on board as the film’s lead actor and producer. The director is Souza, who previously staged the cop thriller “Crown Vic” (Eng. Title: “In the Net of Violence”).

The police were called to the set by emergency call. According to the police, Hutchins was flown to a hospital by helicopter and pronounced dead. Souza was taken to a hospital in Santa Fe in an ambulance. At first nothing was known about his condition.

Since then, there has been much speculation about blank cartridges and a possible exchange with real ones. And at least about negligence on the film set. The gun expert Lars Winkelsdorf explains on Twitter that Baldwin or the crew must not have acted negligently.

Could the gas nozzle have become a projectile?

Accordingly, during film shoots, “blank cartridges cannot simply be shot”. Because with pistols, submachine guns or assault rifles, for example, the self-loading function would fail if there was no gas pressure and recoil, so only one shot could be fired. Therefore, converted weapons would be used. They, in turn, could not fire any real ammunition. Which is why the expert speculates that the wrong ammunition was not simply used on the set.

According to Winkelsdorf, there is a lot to suggest that “due to errors in the conversion of the film gun, the gas nozzle in this case detached itself and thus became a projectile”. The trajectory of such a part is unpredictable, it could also splinter “and it would not be unusual if parts of it were catapulted out of the barrel at an angle of 45 ° or more”.

Case commemorates the death of Brandon Lee

In 1993 Bruce Lee’s son was killed while filming The Crow. He had taken on the title role in the comic book adaptation “The Crow”. The tragic incident occurred while filming a scene; a pistol was prepared incorrectly. Instead of blank cartridges, a real projectile was accidentally fired. Despite a six-hour emergency operation, Brandon Lee could not be saved and Brandon Lee died at the age of 28.

The actor Jon-Erik Hexum died on the set of the series “Cover Up” in 1984. He shot himself while filming a scene about Russian roulette. Hexum held a gun loaded with blank cartridges to his head and pulled the trigger Explosion when fired injured his head, he died in hospital.

In “Rust” Baldwin plays the bandit Harland Rust, who has a bounty on his head. Together with his 13-year-old grandson, he has to flee from bounty hunters and law enforcement officers. The cast includes Frances Fisher, Jensen Ackles, Brady Noon and Travis Fimmel, among others.

In his long career, Baldwin took action roles in films such as “Hunt for Red October” or “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”, but was also in dramas such as “Blue Jasmine”, “Still Alice – My Life Without Yesterday” and 2019 starred in the crime film “Motherless Brooklyn”.

The actor has been married to Hilaria Baldwin since 2012 and they have six children. Baldwin has a daughter Ireland from his marriage to actress Kim Basinger.
