The Confederation awaits a decision from Swissmedic

A booster dose could be recommended by the Swiss Institute for Therapeutic Products because of a decrease in the effectiveness of the vaccine in people over 80 years, said Thursday Alain Berset.

The Confederation and the Cantons are suspended from Swissmedic’s decision to recommend a third dose of vaccine. People over 80 could be the first to be affected, Health Minister Alain Berset said on Thursday.

“We have regular exchanges with the Federal Vaccination Commission and the Cantons. We are awaiting Swissmedic’s decision, ”he told the media in Bern. It will still be necessary to determine to whom and when a booster vaccination will be offered.

But there was some decrease in the effectiveness of the vaccine after a few months in people over 80 years. The Townships will therefore have to prepare for recalls for these people.

Currently, “there is still little evidence on the benefit of a recall for everyone,” added Patrick Mathys, head of the Crisis Management and International Collaboration section of the Federal Office of Public Health. In general, it is important to implement these vaccinations where they make sense.

Even if no vaccine protects 100%, those available in Switzerland are safe, effective and of very high quality, assured Alain Berset. The vaccine works and this is scientifically proven, added the director of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Health (CDS) Lukas Engelberger.

And to call not to politicize the injection. It is not he who divides society but the pandemic. The vaccine is the best way to avoid this split.

Risk area

“We are not yet outside the risk zone” despite a more relaxed situation than in August, believes Lukas Engelberger. The numbers of infections and people hospitalized after an infection have been declining for several weeks. However, the situation is only slowly easing in hospitals.

The many infections over the past few weeks are still being felt. The majority of people hospitalized are not vaccinated. They represent a risk for the whole of society and the economy, underlined Lukas Engelberger.

Strong support from the Townships

“We have seen a direct and strong correlation between vaccination rate and incidence in the same region. We want to avoid local outbreaks with the onset of winter, ”added Federal Councilor Alain Berset.

The vaccination week which will take place in November, “Together to get out of the pandemic”, is therefore essential. Information is at the center of this campaign. We have to reach people, he insisted.

It is important to continue to vaccinate. “Personally, I am optimistic that we will achieve a good level of immunity before winter,” according to the president of CDS.

The support of the Cantons is strong in the vaccination offensive, concluded the Minister of Health. It is up to them to see where this campaign will be most useful, in tourism circles, in front of shopping centers, or in ski resorts.
