UNHCR calls on Switzerland to welcome more …

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi on Thursday welcomed Bern’s decision to increase humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in Bern. However, he called on the Confederation to host more refugees.

Bern approved in September an additional contribution of 33 million francs for aid provided on the spot, which will bring its aid to Afghanistan and neighboring states to 60 million until the end of 2022. “Another way to demonstrate its solidarity and resettlement, especially of vulnerable people such as women and children, ”he said, quoted in a press release issued after a meeting with Ignazio Cassis.

During a forum organized in early October by the European Union, Mr. Grandi asked that European countries welcome by way of resettlement 42,500 Afghan refugees over the next five years, recalls the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR).

And Mr. Grandi wrote to Mr. Cassis at the end of September, asking for more resettlement places for Afghan refugees. For the Confederation, the priority is on-site assistance. But Switzerland remains ready to participate in a possible reception operation coordinated at the international level.

Thursday, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) assured that Switzerland “will continue to actively support efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,” said his services in a separate statement.

Ticino also assured that Switzerland would continue to make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees.
