Tornadoes not excluded
Storm low “Ignatz” lashes across the country
The first autumn storm of this season has been sweeping across Germany for a few hours. In connection with heavy showers, gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour are possible. According to ntv meteorologist Björn Alexander, “Ignatz” is a normal storm low, but it could still be dangerous.
The storm “Ignatz” began its march across Germany early in the morning. The first strong autumn storm of the year brought violent gusts in many places, sometimes also thunderstorms and rain. During the day, ntv meteorologist Björn Alexander expects heavy gusts of wind and sometimes gale-force gusts of up to 105 kilometers per hour in a strip across the middle to the east and north-east of Germany. In the mountains there could even be hurricane gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
All in all, “Ignatz” is a completely normal storm, as it feels like ten times across the North Sea in autumn and winter. However, this storm now hits trees, some of which are still fully leafy. “This means that there is a risk to life and limb, especially in forests and generally under trees. Because the leaves of the wind still have a large area to attack,” says Björn Alexander.
The police situation centers initially had no major damage reports; Occasionally the wind tore up trees, but worse did not happen, according to Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg. In Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony, a man was hit by a falling branch on Wednesday evening, but was only slightly injured, the police said.
“Short-lived tornadoes” not excluded
Deutsche Bahn warned of possible train cancellations or delays due to the storm. However, in the morning there were still no reports of actual disruptions in rail traffic. In the northern half of Germany, the weather service warned of thunderstorms moving eastwards, in which hurricane-like gusts could blow at up to 105 kilometers per hour. “Short-lived tornadoes” are not excluded, it said.
In the course of the afternoon, according to the DWD, the wind decreases from the west again. It’s getting cooler overall. On Thursday the temperatures are between 15 and 18 degrees, in the west and north between 12 and 15 degrees.
