activists try to requisition an abandoned school for the families of the Gayeulles camp

Several hundred demonstrators in the streets of Rennes, demonstrated this Saturday afternoon, to demand accommodation solutions for the families of the Gayeulles camp, some of which are currently hosted in Thorigné-Fouillard, on a site loaned by the scouts of France. A gathering called for by many organizations. The activists are worried about the coming cold, and the living conditions in tents, very precarious. In the afternoon, they requisitioned an abandoned school in the city center, the Faux-Pont school.

“We have been asking for the shelter of the families of the Gayeulles camp for several weeks,” explains one of the organizers, who requested anonymity. “The prefecture is turning a deaf ear, and the town hall has decided not to do more than what they are doing. By coming here, we show everyone that there are empty premises in Rennes, in good condition, which belong to the town hall. It is only up to the town hall to say that they make this place available. These are not accommodation, but we can fit in, we know how to do it, we sometimes do it in gyms. “ The school was finally evacuated by the police around 7 p.m., calmly, at the request of the town hall. The demonstrators call for a rally on Monday in front of the town hall at 6 p.m. to denounce this decision. *

A building “not suitable” according to the town hall

In a statement, this Saturday evening, the town hall is justified. “The building currently occupied, which previously housed the Faux-Pont nursery school, is not suitable for accommodation and has been assigned to associations. The City of Rennes, whose criminal liability is engaged in the event of occupation without right or title, requested the building to be evacuated. The City of Rennes has been strongly mobilized, for many years, to compensate for the lack of places and the saturation of the national shelter system. As such, the City directly accommodates 950 people, every evening, even though sheltering people without accommodation is the exclusive responsibility of the State. It no longer has the logistical and financial capacity to offer additional places.
