- The corona vaccination reliably protects against severe courses
- According to new RKI figures, the number of people vaccinated in intensive care units in Germany has increased
- How is that explained? The RKI has a simple explanation for this
It has only been a few weeks since the health minister formulated it Jens Spahn reassuring words for all corona vaccinated people. 95 percent of all patients with the virus who are treated in the intensive care unit are not vaccinated, the “Tagesschau” quotes him. What is an appeal for vaccination is also a warning to the unvaccinated. Read here: 1000 deaths after corona vaccination investigated.
Spahn’s statement contrasts with current figures from the Robert Koch Institute. The proportion of vaccinated corona patients on the The intensive care unit is now higher than around five percent – especially among the elderly. According to the current RKI weekly report, the proportion of “probable vaccine breakthroughs in Covid 19 cases in intensive care units” in the group of over-60s was 24.1 percent in the weeks of September. The proportion of apparently vaccinated corona infected people who had to be treated in hospital was 36.8 percent.

Why do more vaccinated people end up in intensive care units?
The RKI writes a simple explanation: “It is to be expected that more vaccination breakthroughs will be recorded over time, as more and more people are generally vaccinated and SARS-CoV-2 is currently spreading again more and more. This increases the likelihood of coming into contact with the virus as a fully vaccinated person. ” Also read: End of the free tests: Everything you need to know about the new Corona rule
In Germany, 65.3 percent of the population are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. The rate among adults was 75.8 percent on Sunday. The proportion of vaccinated Covid patients is still with one severe disease course very low. In the September weeks, which are now showing a sharp increase, there were still only 122 over 60-year-olds who were vaccinated and were in an intensive care unit. With thousands of new infections every day.
Research teams and medical professionals also highlight the good effect of the vaccine emphasize its effectiveness. Gernot Marx, President of the Association of Intensive Care and Emergency Physicians (Divi), tells our editorial team: “We see a clear picture of the situation in the German intensive care units: patients with severe and fatal corona courses are in almost all cases unvaccinated.”
The vaccination breakthroughs with severe courses are still in the single-digit percentage range. And then mostly it hits very old people or patients whose immune system is already weakened by chemotherapy or long-term cortisone treatment. The Federal Ministry of Health also stated in a response to a request from the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag: “The fact is that vaccinations protect and a lack of vaccination protection is the main reason why people with Covid-19 infection need intensive medical treatment.”
Corona vaccination: Left party attacks Spahn and accuses him of deception
At the same time, the von Spahn house has seen a growing proportion of vaccinated people in intensive care units in recent weeks. According to the Ministry of Health, which refers to the RKI, 11,419 people were treated with the virus in an intensive care unit from the beginning of February to the beginning of September, in 210 cases during this period the patients were vaccinated. That is 1.84 percent of all cases. From mid-August to early September alone, the proportion of vaccinated corona patients in the intensive care units was therefore already at 10.03 percent, i.e. 119 out of 1186 cases.
The Left Party is now attacking Spahn and his ministry. The minister used “completely outdated figures” and “deceived the public about the actual extent of vaccination breakthroughs,” says left-wing MPs Sahra Wagenknecht our editorial team. Read here: Lauterbach attacks Sahra Wagenknecht for statements about vaccination breakthroughs.
But the situation is complicated. The decisive question is: which effect works how strong – the growing number of those vaccinated or the weaker one Protective effect the vaccination?
Experts agree: The corona vaccination protects very well
There is still no clear answer to this. But there are studies and analyzes that help. Biontech and Pfizer report that the effectiveness of the Covid vaccination decreases by about six percent every eight weeks.
From an average of 96 percent protection, the effectiveness drops in the months afterwards to just over 80 percent. If the protective effect decreases over time, this could also be the case Hospitalisierungen influence despite vaccination and let the numbers increase.
Professionals also recognize that a few people over 60 and those with weakened immune systems are only weak or even immune no immune response at all to develop. In spite of a double vaccination dose, the protection is poor. According to immunologists, the proportion of these “vaccine failures” is around five percent among the elderly. In addition, the effect of the vaccine wears off faster in older people.
On the one hand, this is due to the fact that right from the start less antibodies against corona, on the other hand, previous illnesses such as high blood pressure or diabetes weaken the vaccination effect – this also occurs more frequently in old age. The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) reacted to this. She was unusually clear in favor of vaccinating all seniors aged 70 and over, nurses and medical professionals with a third dose. Reason also here: In older age, the immune response after vaccinations is generally lower and vaccination breakthroughs could more often lead to a more severe course.
Doctors lack detailed data on vaccination status
There is also a problem: New, detailed data about the patients in the hospitals. The Association of Intensive Care Physicians (DIVI) informs our editors upon request: There is feedback from the major university hospitals on vaccinated or unvaccinated corona patients. Almost all or most of the unvaccinated people would be in the intensive care unit there. But there is no information on the situation in the many small intensive care units.
Health insurances do not record the vaccination status, nor are general practitioners obliged to do so. The Robert Koch Institute also gave several cases as “Not vaccinated” although it was unclear whether the people had received the vaccination or not. Now the institute had to correct this – with an impact on the statistics. The RKI downgraded the protective effectiveness against severe corona courses despite vaccination in older people by six percentage points.
What’s more: If a person ends up in the hospital because of a broken arm or a stomach problem, they are routinely tested for corona there. If the test is positive, the patient is considered a “hospitalization case”. And falls into the statistics, even though it’s about the broken arm.
Despite the many factors in the current increase in vaccination breakthroughs, experts agree on one thing: vaccinations are effective and important. A new study from France shows what studies from Israel, Great Britain and the USA have already shown: People who have been vaccinated have a nine times less riskto be hospitalized or to die of corona as an unvaccinated person.
