Tour de France 2022: a 4th stage between Dunkirk and Calais with many climbs

It is now official: the route of the Tour de France 2022 – unveiled at midday this Thursday – returns to Nord Pas-de-Calais after four years of absence. After three stages in Denmark including the Grand Départ from Copenhagen, the Grande Boucle will arrive in France with a rest day on Monday July 4 in Lille.

The next day, the start of the 4th stage will be given in Dunkirk on Tuesday July 5. The third port in France is hosting a stage for the 20th time in its history and a start for the 7th time, including the Grand Départ in 2001. The latter gave the opportunity to a French rider, Christophe Moreau, to don the yellow jersey by winning the prologue.

After 172 kilometers of racing, the peloton will join Calais, which came to town for the first time in its history. An arrival on the Opal Coast via the Gis-Nez and Blanc-Nez caps.

We are very happy to come back and I believe that the public from the North and Hauts-de-France who showed it to us at Paris-Roubaix will also be very happy to welcome us – Christian Prudhomme

Six listed climbs

Christian Prudhomme, the boss of the Tour de France, confided in France Bleu on this course which promises to be more complicated than it seems: “A very selective stage which will not, moreover, be considered as a plain stage. There are many climbs, slides, six climbs listed with sometimes severe percentages, short of course, but severe with often open terrain in high, so there are border possibilities. “

And insist on the passage through the Opal Coast : “And then, a return along the coast, on a course which was that of the time trial of 1994, that Thierry Gouvenou (responsible for the course at ASO, editor’s note) well known as a runner. So, it will be an important stage which will pass by grandiose places Cap Gris-Nez, Cap Blanc-Nez. It will be magnificent. “
