With artificial intelligence anything is possible. This is why companies that are active in technology are constantly exploring possibilities for innovation in order to improve the attractiveness of their products.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is in the process of exploring new health-focused features for its AirPods. These features could include the use of headphones to take the temperature of wearers, monitor their posture and improve their hearing. The WSJ notes that it is not clear whether the latter feature significantly differs from the existing “Conversation Boost” feature of AirPods.

According to Theverge, the Wall Street Journal advises that these functions “are not expected for next year and may never be available to consumers or the schedule could change. In other words, it looks like the iPhone maker is just exploring these new health features, rather than actively working on incorporating them into products that are slated to be released within a year or two.

So, Theverge reports that adding these sensors would make sense for Apple. The company increasingly markets its products on the basis of their health and fitness applications, although so far that attention has been focused on the Apple Watch. Last month, reports suggested the company was considering adding various sensors, including to monitor blood pressure, temperature, sleep quality, blood oxygen and blood sugar.

Integrating health functions into commercial products, however, is a delicate job, mainly due to the difficulty of meeting high medical regulatory standards. This inevitably leads to delays. It was reported in June, for example, that the upcoming Apple Watch would add temperature tracking.

Unfortunately, the WSJ report doesn’t contain many details on Apple’s plans for the AirPods. Taking a person’s ear temperature is commonplace, however, and there are many posture devices on the market that use digital sensors to alert wearers when they are slumped. Apple has already shown that it wants to use AirPods as a kind of hearing aid, although the headphones are not FDA approved for this purpose.
