POLITICS – A great reward for the Communist mayor of Grigny. Philippe Rio, city councilor of Essonne since 2012, was elected best mayor in the world by the City Mayors Foundation on Monday, September 13, tied with the mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb.
He was distinguished among thirty other mayors from 21 different countries who have all distinguished themselves during the Covid-19 pandemic, a theme that the City Mayors Foundation wanted central to reward the best city councilors of the year 2021.
“It’s nice, but I’m not going to take the melon. It is an encouragement to lift the many mountains in our path ”, Philippe Rio told the Parisian after hearing the news.
“If today this title can help a kid who is looking for an internship and who proudly displays Grigny on his CV, who does not change his city because he is ashamed of it or because he knows that it is discriminatory, we will have won something very important ”, he added on Franceinfo. Grigny, 30,000 inhabitants, is one of the poorest towns in France.
The mayor of Saint-Omer François Decoster rewarded
Note that the mayor of Saint-Omer in the Pas-de-Calais, François Decoster (MoDem), also received a distinction in the public service category during this 2021 edition.
The City Mayors Foundation is an international think tank run by European, Asian and American professionals “to promote strong, just and prosperous cities and good local government”. The association has awarded the prize for the best mayor almost every year since 2004.
However, this classification is not scientific. The organization identifies elected officials who are rather progressive, who focus, among other things, on reducing poverty, welcoming refugees and sustainable development in their city.
