Prosecutor calls for indictment of prime minister in investigation into president’s assassination

Due to phone calls that the Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry would have had with one of the main suspects of the murder of President Jovenel Moïse, the chief prosecutor of Port-au-Prince asked, this Tuesday, the judge investigating the assassination of the indictment.

Bed-Ford Claude, the commissioner of the government of Port-au-Prince – equivalent of the prosecutor – has also asked that Ariel Henry be prohibited from leaving Haitian territory “because of the gravity of the facts exposed”.

“Compromising elements”

President Moïse was shot dead on July 7 by an armed commando at his home in Port-au-Prince. In a letter addressed to the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince, Bed-Ford Claude assures that “there are sufficient compromising elements which form his conviction on the advisability of prosecuting Mr. Henry and asking for his pure indictment and simple ”.

In a second letter, sent to the director of the migration administration, the government commissioner justifies the requested ban on leaving the territory against Ariel Henry “for serious suspicions of assassination of the President of the Republic” . Friday evening, Bed-Ford Claude had already invited the head of government to appear at the prosecution on Tuesday, claiming that Ariel Henry had, a few hours after the murder of Jovenel Moïse, telephone conversations with one of the people actively sought in the part of the investigation.

Forty people arrested

Former executive of the anti-corruption unit, dependent on the Ministry of Justice, Joseph Félix Badio would have been geolocated in the district where the private residence of Jovenel Moïse is located during calls made to Ariel Henry at 04:03 then 04:20 at night of the attack. On Saturday, the Prime Minister then denounced the prosecutor’s approach, calling it a diversion.

“The diversionary maneuvers to sow confusion and prevent justice from doing its job serenely will not pass,” Ariel Henry responded. “The real culprits, the intellectual authors and the sponsors of the odious assassination of President Jovenel Moïse will be found, brought to justice and punished for their crime,” he added. Forty-four people, including 18 Colombians and two Americans of Haitian origin, have already been arrested as part of the investigation into the murder of Jovenel Moïse, committed at his home without any police officer from his close security being injured .
