A porn actor and actress were employed for the performance. The fact that real sex is shown on a theater stage should be a premiere.
Live sex is shown in Zurich for the production of “Short interviews with nasty men”.
Director Yana Ross says anything else would have been cowardly.
In the run-up it was speculated whether the playhouse will really show sex.
The Zurich Schauspielhaus is currently staging the play “Short interviews with nasty men” based on short stories by David Foster Wallace. In advance, there had been speculation about whether real sex should be shown during the play, because as the “Tages-Anzeiger” reported, porn stars had been specially hired.
As the “NZZ am Sonntag” now reports, live sex was actually shown at the premiere on Saturday in the Schiffbau – probably a world premiere.
«Porn attracts and repels»
“Anything else would have been cowardly,” says Yana Ross, one of the seven in-house directors at the Zurich Schauspielhaus, to “NZZ am Sonntag”. Like almost nothing else, porn has the power to attract and repel people at the same time. “It has long since become a pop genre in our culture,” said Ross. “We can no longer afford to close our eyes to him as we do to something filthy.”
It is important to Ross that real sex with two people – with porn actress Katie Pears and actor Conny Dachs – takes place on stage. «Performativity only takes place with real actors and a real audience. Because you are watching real people who, in turn, are very well aware of the audience, ”she says.
The Schauspielhaus has placed a warning on its website: “Verbal violence, live sex”. The piece is only permitted for people over the age of 18 and you can leave the performance at any time. A panel discussion and two workshops will take place in October.
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a collection of 23 short stories by David Foster Wallace, published in 1999. The topics covered revolve around modern masculinity, chauvinism and misogyny. «Short Interviews» has been adapted several times for theater and film, including in 2009 by John Krasinski (The Office, A Quiet Place).
