Party before everyone else on the right, the ex-LR has failed to dissuade his competitors from embarking on the 2022 presidential race.
In the best scenario, Xavier Bertrand would have already changed his clothes at the beginning of September. Two years after first declaring himself “to prepare” in the presidential election, the president of Hauts-de-France would be, for the right, more than one option among others. On the strength of excellent polls, he would be the nominated candidate, as his competitors and his former Les Républicains (LR) party could not have failed to admit.
The picture, finally, is much less clear. He may not have taken the candidate by surprise who, with Release, earlier claimed to “Always plan for the worst-case scenario”. At the very least, he disappointed an entourage where everyone did not see the road so long, nor so uncertain.
Seven months before the presidential election, the former minister has not folded the game on the right. Its long pre-campaign and a “determination” repeated hundred times did not dissuade other candidates from entering the arena.
