A Moroccan truck driver caused a double accident Sunday evening in La Jonquera, on the Spanish border. He struck and killed one of his colleagues in a roundabout which he then took in the wrong direction causing a second accident with a car. On board, 3 French people were seriously injured.
This double accident took place on Sunday August 1, around 6 p.m., in La Jonquera, a town on the Spanish border. According to information published by the Catalan newspaper Diari de Girona, the driver of a truck fatally ran over a pedestrian on a roundabout on Route Nationale 2.
He then fled by taking this roundabout upside down and crashed into a passenger vehicle registered in France.
The victim, found lifeless, was another truck driver. According to ACN, Catalan news agency, the two men quarreled shortly before the tragedy.
3 French seriously injured
Three people – whose ages are unknown – were injured in this second accident. Spanish firefighters and emergency services intervened on the spot. The French victims had to be evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.
The truck driver’s truck ended up in a lamppost. Traffic on the N2 was cut to allow emergency services to intervene.
Arrested for dangerous and drunk driving
Arrested by the Catalan police, the truck driver was taken into custody. This 39-year-old man of Moroccan nationality was also driving under the influence of alcohol.
He should be presented to justice, in the court of Figueres in the coming days.
