Major fire at the Franco-Spanish border between Cerbère and Portbou

The firefighters are mobilized this Saturday afternoon on a major forest fire which broke out on the ridge which forms the border between France and Spain in the municipalities of Cerbère (Pyrénées-Orientales) and Portbou (Catalonia). At 17 o’clock, the flames had already destroyed 10 hectares of vegetation and threaten several hundred other hectares, mainly on the Catalan side of the border. The departmental road between Cerbère and Portbou has been closed.

Collaboration between French and Catalan firefighters

French and Catalan firefighters have mobilized significant resources. France dispatched 116 firefighters and a water bomber helicopter. Catalonia has sent two helicopters as well as two water bombers. Catalan side, a service station is in particular threatened as well as the town of Portbou which is located below the ridge. In 2012, a huge fire in the area killed several people: people who were found on the road, trapped by the flames above the sea and who had jumped into the water from the top of the cliff.
