Ministers meeting at the Elysee Palace and a president aloft. Emmanuel Macron led a council of ministers in an unprecedented format, Wednesday July 28. For this last government meeting before the summer vacation, the Head of State officiated on board the plane that brought him back from French Polynesia, where he made a three-day trip.
If the format of videoconferencing has become widespread since the start of the health crisis to avoid contact between members of the government, such a situation had never arisen so far. Below, the ministers participating in this meeting from the Élysée Palace.
The head of state was initially supposed to organize the council of ministers from Papeete, before his departure, but the agenda has been significantly changed. The presidential A330 is equipped to allow, via a high-speed link, permanent contact with the teams on the ground. In addition, it has a dedicated meeting room.
Before the Council of Ministers, Jean Castex had gathered members of the government in Matignon to discuss the latest developments in the health crisis. Afterwards, spokesman Gabriel Attal gave his usual report from the presidential palace.
If the councils of ministers traditionally take place at the Élysée, in the same way as the defense councils, nothing prevents the executive from changing the format. Thus, in November 2018 – in the midst of the yellow vests crisis – the President of the Republic symbolically relocated the meeting to Charleville-Mézières (Ardennes), joined on site by his ministers.
