A first person died and four others are hospitalized in Iraq after suffering from mucormycosis, a hospital source announced on Tuesday, saying that “they had contracted this so-called” black fungus “disease after having Covid-19.
“A 51-year-old religious man has died and four other people are currently being treated in hospital, all suffering from the + black fungus + resulting from the Covid,” said this source in Nassiriya, in southern Iraq. Baghdad health ministry spokesman Saif al Badr confirmed the death and hospitalizations to AFP, without giving further details.
Iraq has recorded more than 1.2 million cases of contamination with Covid-19, a disease which has caused the death of 16,375 people. Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that can be fatal in some patients. It affects the sinuses, brain, lungs and eyes.
Shaken by a second wave of very aggressive coronavirus, India recently recorded several thousand cases of people affected by mucormycosis. Hundreds of people died, according to the press. According to specialists, the rapid spread of the infection is largely attributed to the uncontrolled use of corticosteroids to treat coronavirus patients.
Excessive use of these drugs or their taking by people whose immune system is weakened by disease in fact increases the risk of infection by these fungi.
In addition, specialists point to environmental causes that can promote the proliferation of these fungi and the multiplication of contaminations, such as contaminated water in oxygen bottles or in air humidifiers.
